Tutor Job Description




Tutoring is a proven and highly effective way of improving tutee success. It is a special kind of teaching that complements, but is often quite unique from, that performed by professors and teaching assistants. As a tutor, you will share with these other kinds of teachers the goal of leading tutees toward independent learning. As a peer, you will be an ally with the tutees, a teammate who guides or coaches them by sharing skills and knowledge, as well as by communicating confidence and encouragement. You will also serve as an example, showing how a successful tutee approaches academic challenges. The benefits for tutees are obvious: one-on-one attention, individualized explanation, and a chance to ask as many question as they like.


Goals for Tutors

As a tutor, your appointment is to:

  • Help the tutee develop a positive self-concept;
  • Identify and address the academic challenges of the tutees by using the tutee's own experience and skills in tutoring;
  • Establish immediate and continuing rapport with the tutee.
  • Continually evaluate and improve your tutoring expertise. By using a variety of tutoring methods, not only will you help your tutee understanding the material better, but you also will increase your own knowledge of the subject area you are tutoring; and, last, but not least,
  • Evaluate and aid in the continuing development of the tutoring program.

Tutor Expectations

  • Be prepared to meet with the student on a regular basis.
  • Use objectives and procedures that empower the student to work on his/her own.
  • Be as familiar as possible with the material before the meeting.
  • Both tutor and student have the responsibility to be on time for meetings and to call in advance if he/she cannot make the scheduled meeting times.

Candidates for tutoring positions should meet most or all of the following criteria:

  1. GPA of 3.0 or higher
  2. Passed a minimum of two content courses with a grade of A- or better in the department for which the candidate desires to tutor.
  3. Have a referral or be recommended by at least one faculty member and/or academic dean in the content area
  4. Possess good oral and written communication skills (demonstrated in the interview).
  5. Availability of two-hour time blocks for scheduling tutoring
  6. Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for teaching and tutoring
  7. Available for tutor training provided by the Coordinator of Student Services.
  8. Be able to work evenings and weekends
  9. Complete and turn in monthly evaluations of tutoring sessions.

Additional Requirements

  1. Maintain accurate records and return them to the supervisor in a timely fashion.
  2. Strict adherence to the police and procedures outlined in the Tutor Handbook.
  3. Possess the utmost respect for the confidentially of the tutor/tutee relationship.
  4. Report concerns about tutees to the Coordinator of Student Services. Areas of concern to report are: absenteeism, lack of class/tutor session preparation, emotional stress, questions pertaining to academic integrity, or any other indications of obstacles to academic success.

Compensation

Salaries paid to student employees are set by the Academic Resource Center in accordance with the Student Employment Office guidelines. They are commensurate with other campus positions. Information can be obtained through the Student Employment Office, seo.georgetown.edu, or you can contact the Coordinator of Student Services in the Academic Resource Center.

Because tutoring demands vary from semester to semester, it is difficult to maintain a field or number of tutors or to guarantee any tutoring work beyond a given semester. For that reason, you are encouraged to investigate and secure other employment opportunities on and off campus. If you are released, you will be advised of the situation by the Coordinator of Student Services in the Academic Resource Center, and you will be given preference for any tutoring in your discipline when a student requires assistance.

Payment

  1. The student employee rate is established on an hourly basis. No additional pay is granted for simultaneously tutoring two or more students during a given time period.
  2. All documentation for time worked must be submitted on the appropriate forms. Time sheets without signatures will not be submitted for payment.
  3. Paychecks are issued bi-weekly.

Paperwork

Every person who would like to become a tutor must fill out the application form online or in the Academic Resource Center. It will ask for your name, address, telephone number, academic information, as well as for references that will be called prior to hiring.

Conditions of Employment Statement

As an employee of the Academic Resource Center, you are required to sign a Conditions of Employment Statement. Guidelines regarding issues such as confidentiality, academic integrity, and conduct while employed by the ARC are addressed. This form must be completed and submitted before you can begin tutoring. Any violation of the guidelines will result in the immediate termination of your employment with the ARC. In addition, there are NCAA rules that affect your employment (see below).

Professional and Academic Integrity

Georgetown University takes the issue of professional and academic integrity very seriously. Tutors are responsible to act with integrity at all times.

The following will result in termination:

  1. Failure to uphold the general duties of at tutor outlined in the Tutor Handbook.
  2. Failure to observe the rules and regulations of the Tutor Handbook.
  3. Deficient academic skills.
  4. Falsification of time sheets.
  5. Disruptive behavior that calls unfavorable attention to the tutor as a representative of the Academic Resource Center, to the tutee(s) or other organization within Georgetown University.
  6. Failure to maintain tutoring appointments.
  7. Violating Georgetown University policies regarding academic integrity.
  8. Failure to attend meetings or complete mandatory training.
  9. Violation of any NCAA mandates regarding "extra benefits" or other pertinent policies.
  10. Any violation of tutor-tutee confidentiality.
