Housing ServicesThe Office of Housing Services is located on the first floor of Harbin Hall. Incoming freshmen and transfer students are provided with information about special requests for housing based upon a medical need or disability after acceptance to the university. For upper class students, the special request form is available from the Learning Skills Specialist in the Academic Resource Center (Room 335, Leavey Center) prior to the housing selection process. It is important to get in touch with the ARC in advance of normal housing deadlines so that all requests can be carefully considered and if necessary, accommodations made prior to the start of the housing selection process. On-campus housing is only offered for undergraduate students. No on-campus housing can be provided for students at the graduate level. Housing AccommodationsCampus Housing attempts to offer options for undergraduate students who require medical-related housing. Wheelchair access or other barrier free spaces can be arranged upon request, and depending on availability. Each year, students are required to reapply for housing. Students with documented disabilities and other medical needs will need to reapply for special housing consideration if their condition continues to warrant special housing. Students requesting special consideration for housing based on a medical condition must submit current documentation to the Academic Resource Center by Friday, October 3, 2008. The Director of Housing, in consultation with the Academic Resource Center, Student Health Center and/or the Counseling Center, will make decisions on specific room assignments on a space available basis. The Georgetown University community is committed to making a good faith effort that appropriate adjustments are made that afford all students access inside the classroom, in housing and around campus. Procedure:A student seeking special housing accommodations for a medical reason should use the following procedure: 1. Complete the “Medical Request for Special Housing Consideration” form. Current students must meet with the Learning Skills Specialist by Friday, September 26, 2008 to receive this form. Incoming students, transfer students and returning students may contact the ARC arc@georgetown.edu to obtain the form. Documentation should be mailed to the following address:
Attn: Sara Mahoney, Learning Skills Specialist 2. Students are responsible for requesting that their medical care provider write a detailed letter in accordance with the guidelines in the “Medical Request for Special Housing Consideration” form; this letter should be returned to the ARC. This supporting information from the student’s medical care provider must be received by the ARC in order for the request to be considered. The medical information provided by the student and the medical care provider will be used for the purpose of evaluating the request for special housing, and will be kept confidential. 3. Depending on the case and the documentation presented, medical staff in Georgetown University’s Student Health Center and Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) may review medical documentation. The medical care provider’s documentation must provide enough detail to allow qualified health care providers in the Student Health Center and/or CAPS to make an independent judgment of the need for the request. Please understand that a simple request from a physician may be insufficient to support a request for accommodations; the request should be on letterhead and accompanied with a clear explanation and/or documentation of the specific nature of the student’s medical condition and the reasons it necessitates special housing. The medical care provider’s area of specialty should coincide with the student’s medical request. 4. After reviewing the information provided by the student’s medical care provider, the Director of Housing, in consultation with the ARC, the Student Health Center and/or CAPS, will make a decision regarding the type of housing which would best meet a student’s needs. All requests will be reviewed on an individual basis. Please note:
5. The Director of Housing will notify the student in writing via e-mail when a decision has been made. |
